The 16th Annual ASA Quality and Productivity ResearchConference was held May 19-21 at GE's renowned Research and DevelopmentCenter in Schenectady, New York. GE Corporate Research & Development'sApplied Statistics Program and RPI's Department of Decision Sciences &Engineering Systems organized the conference, which showcased "Six SigmaQuality: Accomplishments, Opportunities, and Challenges," and hosted over300 participants from 10 countries - the largest and broadest attendanceever! Six Sigma is a quality improvement initiative popularized by Motorolawhich is producing significant bottom-line results for GE, AlliedSignal,and others.
Invited presentations were offered by some of the world'sleading quality practitioners: Blan Godfrey (Juran Institute), Stu Hunter(Princeton U., Prof. Emeritus), William Meeker (Prof., Iowa State University),Ron Snee (Management Consultant), Bill Hill (AlliedSignal Six Sigma Leader),and Michele Boulanger (Motorola Director of iDEN Quality & CustomerSatisfaction). Interspersed were numerous lively and parallel contributedpaper tracks, featuring such speakers as Soren Bisgaard, Tom Boardman,Jim Lucas, John Ramberg, and ranging in topics from "Random Run Order withoutResetting Factors for Efficient Six-Sigma Experiments" to "What I Learnedin first Two Years as an Industrial Statistician."
The conference kicked-off with two parallel workshops,organized by GE's Gerry Hahn, Roger Hoerl, and Necip Doganaksoy on "SixSigma Concepts for Statisticians" (80 attendees), and "Useful StatisticalTools You Did NOT Learn in Six Sigma Training" (140 attendees). At theclose of the first day, Jeff Hooper (Lucent Technologies) led a "roast"in honor of Stu Hunter for his colossal contributions to the field andthe Q&P section, which was highlighted by Stu's characteristic wit.The conference closed with an open question panel discussion (Snee, Hunter,Godfrey, Hill, Boulanger, and Meeker), followed by maximum capacity toursof GE's Selkirk Plastics facility and the GE Research and Development Center.
Conference proceedings are downloadable from the conferencewebsite Papers.The proceedings include a paper by George Box and Alberto Luceno receivedby all conference attendees. The eminent Dr. Box was originally scheduledto present and had wanted to attend the conference, however he was unableto do so. Thanks goes to the conference chairs, GE Corporate Research &Development's Tim Keyes and Angie Neff, and all conference participantsfor making the 1999 QPRC a roaring success. The Year 2000 QPRC - StatisticalApplications for the New Millennium - will be jointly sponsored by theASA Q&P, by IMS, and by SPES. The GE Researchand Development Center, located in New York's historic Capital District,is a 15 minute drive from AlbanyInternational Airport. It is 150 miles from New York City (easily accessibleby train), 180 milesfrom Boston, 200 miles from Montreal, and 150 miles from Syracuse, NewYork. In the heart of scenic UpstateNew York, the conference site is also approximately 50 miles from theBerkshire and Catskill mountains and from LakeGeorge (at the foothills of the Adirondacks). New York's State CapitolComplex and Museum, and historic SaratogaSpringsand its famed racewayare nearby. There are manythings to do in the area.Of course, Cooperstownis home to the Baseball Hall of Fame as well as otherattractions. Beautiful LakePlacidhas hosted the Winter Olympics. Local colleges include co-sponsorRensselaerPolytechnic Institute (Troy), the StateUniversity of New York at Albany, and UnionCollege (Schenectady).
