Although statistical process control methods are gaining increased use in healthcare, most improvement work still unfortunately is conducted with very little benefit from simple through advanced statistical methods, or in other cases these methods often are used incorrectly. We summarize the current use of SPC methods in healthcare, important application problems, and opportunities for greater use of statistical quality improvement methods. Recent healthcare work in patient safety, healthcare reliability, risk-adjusted control charts, loss functions, DOE, and rare events will be used to highlight several themes.
